News of the Injury

Well, the sickness has subsided for good. With each day, my injuries hurt less and less. There's still some bruising and swelling in my left hand and bruising on my chest, but each day it hurts less. I don't require painkillers as often or as in high doses.

The doctor originally said two weeks for the bruising to go away, but I must have been traveling at a pretty good rate of speed. I'm guessing it'll take another week or two easy for the bruises and scrapes to completely heal.

As for my collarbone, I can touch the site of the break lightly and it doesn't hurt. There's this little bump at the site of the fracture, and I don't feel the bone moving like it did a few weeks ago, which means it's started to fuse together. Each day, I can move my arm more and more without pain. In fact, just sitting with my arm in a sling or moving it slightly, or even lifting small objects with it doesn't hurt at all. It feels normal.

The worst part about all of this is sleeping at night. Because you can't really put a cast on a collarbone, they put you in a simple arm sling (or a figure-of-eight sling AND arm sling for a bad break--or that, plus screws for a really bad break). This means that the shoulder is exposed. That also means I can't lay on either side. I can't lay on my bad side, obviously. And if I lay on my good side, my bad shoulder sags and then hurts. So I have to lay on my back. I've been trading back and forth between my bed, and the recliner. My back is usually killing me by morning, because I can't roll. :P Either way, it means I usually am only getting six, six and a half hours of sleep a night. :P

So, if I am a little ornery from here until my bone heals enough where I can sleep on it, that's why.

The good news is that I talked to my orthopedist on Wednesday. Since my fracture was a simple fracture, it's been healing quite well. When I see him on May 5th, he said I may be able to lose the sling then. Yay! (My shoulder is already more and more comfortable when I take it out of the sling.) Hopefully I will be able to drive by then again, too. The shoulder should be healed around May 18th (the six week mark).

Right now, I am feeling well enough to draw. So I've been trying a bit, even though it's a bit of a chore. Again, because I've been sleeping poorly, it's hard to stay focused.

Ah well. Overall, life has been better, and has made me realize how much we don't pay attention to things we should, and do pay attention to things we should not. (And I'm not talking about just in the car...I mean this about life in general.)

Glad to hear your're getting better. I hadn't heard of it, though someone on FA did mention a friend of theirs being in a recent accident and breaking his collar bone. Guess that was you, or it's a dark coincidence. Well...GET WELL SOON!
